As a museum book Visual Voyages exceeded my expectations. The full-bleed illustrations capture pivotal moments in the development of Latin American visual culture. The price was more than fair for the quality I received. I went to the exhibit in person, and was delighted to see that I could buy a copy on Amazon.
An extraordinary intellectual journey into the representations of Latin America in over 150 maps, landscape and still life paintings and illustrated manuscripts. Noteworthy is that the depictions are also connected visually and through the written background material to the European heritage which shaped the original perception and interpretation of this part of the world. This is a beautifully illustrated book. The illustrations and maps are a trip back through time as the European World discovers Latin America for the first time. Explorers bring back descriptions of the exotic plants and animals and the artist try and bring them to life for those in Europe. I really enjoyed reading about these early explorations. Enjoy this armchair journey.
Visual Voyages by Daniela Bleichmar is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early September.400 years worth of Latin American imagery of botany, maps, manuscript engraving, woodcuts, and cultural tableaux to explain and describe theology, herbal medicine, eyewitness accounts from European explorers, biological specimens (Albert Eckhout is, by far, the best artist of this, followed by Jose Maria Carbonell's illustrations), rituals and dance, and zoological findings in the 19th century.
