David Jacoby’s latest book, Trump, Trade and the End Of Globalization, combines the perspectives of economics, trade policy, politics, environmental protection, and social justice.Today’s world order has evolved through the formation of dozens of customs unions and currency unions. Jacoby succinctly describes the path that has led to each major and minor trade pact. He tabulates the current exports and imports of goods and of services for each major trading block in Western Europe, East Asia, and North America. Germany, China, and the United States, predominant countries in each trading block, their key trading partners, and their percentage of the total balance of trade are also detailed.The book mainly develops a case for why the United States is struggling to compete in international trade and proposes a solution to turn that around. Jacoby expands on purely financial thinking incorporating economic, environmental, and social constructs such as the genuine progress indicator (GPI). He portrays all the drivers of change in two figures: “View from the West†and “View from the Eastâ€.Finally, Jacoby segments world countries into three categories: Isolationists countries, free-trade countries, and welfare states in order to explore three plausible scenarios for future trading relationships.
