Thank you, THANK YOU!!! I have been saying this for years! IMO, the modern "acting" that takes place before and during sex is our way of begrudgingly giving into the male pornographic fantasy. I hate it. It honestly makes me want to pull out my vibrator and swear off testosterone-laden beauhunks forever! I'm not saying that all men are sex-crazed jerks, but I will tell you that my 5-year college trip was basically several parts of this book in real life (and long nights of coffee and typing--those research papers didn't write themselves, friends...) I cringe now, thinking about the ridiculous things I said and did to try to get and keep "boys" interested, sexually. I saw my friends pretend to be bisexual to keep men entertained, or get wasted to be able to make out with their dorm mates. And it gets much more involved than that. Sure, I may have enjoyed dressing like a slut on Halloween, but it's not something I should have to do on a nightly basis!! Let's face it. We 'act' for our men. We buy (expensive) sexy lingerie to make them happy, or get their minds excited for a 10 minute encounter, then they fall over beside us in a lump of sweat and snoring. Ugh. I can relate to this book. And it made me sad to read that other women did similar and way less dignified things to keep men interested because they think that's what we're supposed to do: PERFORM.
Wasn't quite what I expected
Preforming Sex is an incredibly insightful look into the ways in which women in the United States still are preforming their sexuality and lives. Fahs tackles the problematic proliferation of the discourse of “empowerment†as well as the many ways in which women still, decades after the supposed “sexual liberation,†preform their sexuality for the enjoyment, pleasure and approval of men. One of the more interesting revelations from this book was that the clitoral orgasm has been coopted as an indication of male prowess, it is no longer about a woman’s pleasure but about indicating how well a man can “please†a woman. I think that this book is important for women, especially young women, to read because it offers a good way to really reflect on who you are, what your wants and needs are, and whether they are being met. We all preform our lives to a certain degree, but it’s important to recognize for whom and why we are preforming, especially when it comes to something as unique and intimate as sexuality.
Few books have been able to capture what it is like to be a woman growing up in America today. Performing Sex is one of these. It is important for anyone trying to understand the complex world our young women are now living in. Dr. Fahs provides an intimate look at the challenges they face. Her book is important for those in the academic world of human development, sociology, women's studies, and psychology, but also for individuals seeking greater personal insight. A very important book for our time.
