This is a brilliant work, far deeper than typical middle-grade reader fare. Driven by characters rather than circumstance. Not at all dates; reads as though decades has not passed since its writing. The ending is tough and complex; no magical happy endings nor dark despair here, but the ragged, insistent demand of moving onward that we see in reality.
Have an 11 or 12 year old girl in your family? If so, this is a wonderful story - engaging, easy to read and teaches lots of lessons about expectations, disappointment, surprise, anger, prejudice and acceptance. Strongly recommended.
Gilly Hopkins is a girl whose lived her life in the foster system bouncing from house to house never forming attachments. This is how Gilly likes it as she hold on to hope that her mother will come and get her someday. What this sassy little girl wasn’t counting on was falling for a big woman with an even bigger heart who teaches her what it’s like to be part of a family. The Great Gilly Hopkins deals with issues such a racism, prejudice and social services. It may be a children’s book but it deals with real life adult issues.
The works of Katherine Paterson need nobody's approval. I would only mention that I bought 35 copies of Gilly Hopkins. I sent them home with my fifth grade students to do an independent book report, and, despite the 70's context, they loved the book. It hit home, and they found it accessible and worth their while.
This is a great book with some great life lessons, but there is some language that might not be appropriate for all students/children.
It’s a great story. I was disappointed with the curse words my daughter read at 9 years old. I feel the author could show how naughty and misguided Gilly is without that.
Paperback is exactly the quality you’d expect for $3 and some change, and will last . Pay the extra $7 or 8 for the hardcover if you’re planning on using this for a classroom library because this cheap paperback won’t last half a semester.The story is quite captivating and easy to comprehend. I believe kids will enjoy the story and learn valuable lessons.Update: Do not watch the movie first. I just watched it... kids may enjoy it, but the book is much better.
My daughter is reading this book for a 6th grade report. Not too hard but stretches her thinking. Gilly is a foster child afraid to be hurt again. The book uses her thoughts and then her verbal comments. It's an interesting book along with helping my daughter understand and think about issues that are not really a real part of her own life.
