** I wrote this same review on Goodreads **I was so so so beyond thrilled to get a new Neil and Sophie book! I kept stalking Amazon until it was released! Once I bought it, I immediately dove right in, excited as heck to get back to my faves. But, truthfully?I'm kind of disappointed.Look, I get that not every book in a series can be a winner. I guess I just expected more... *something.* That spark that made me love Neil and Sophie and their friends and family in the first books. This entire thing just smacked of filler to me. It had its moments, don't get me wrong. And the sexy bits were good enough. I just felt like nothing was really fleshed out and it ended rather boringly.At the end, it said a new book, The Boyfriend, would come out next year. Despite my boredom with this book, I'm still eager to get to the next!
I feel as though this felt so rushed and kind of insincere, usually the problems faced in the book are long and unfold in a natural way that makes sense, this just felt confusing, rushed, and impersonal. I felt absolutely nothing while reading this book as opposed to how the first 3 kept me entertained and invested in their story. Its really too bad but i probably won't continue reading the series from here. :(
I would say its 3.75 stars not 4 or 5.** spoiler alert ** I love this series but I just thought this book was okay. I'm not sure about them both now being in love with El-Mudad and how that works in their marriage. Does the connection they have together lessen? I hope not I would hate to see Sophie end up alone after everything she has done for Neil. I was also sick of hearing about job, do it or don't. She is smart and has lots of options. I love them with Olivia. Felt like the family stuff was rushed actually it all felt rushed. How did this happen with El-Mudad nothing about any of that not even some flashbacks?So I guess a mixed bag from me and we will have to wait and see what the next book brings.
Not what I was expecting. **spoiler alert** I don't know how I feel with both characters being in love with El-Mudad and him being a permanent fixture. I miss the days of Sophie and Neil, I just don't feel that spark between them anymore with all these characters in the mix. I loved the previous books so much, the love between Neil and Sophie emanated through the pages. Sadly, I'm not sure if i'll be returning for the next installment.
I'd really give this book a 2.5, but better to be generous than mean. There are many facets of this story that failed to live up to the brilliance of its predecessors. First, there are quite a few editing errors, where a word is missing, for example. And, while an author is quite free to take her story anywhere she likes, I just thought the idea of El-Mudad, Sophie and Neil becoming a "family" while he lived in France and they lived in Sagaponack was far fetched. Next, the overwhelming angst and tension Sophie and Susan and Sasha brought to the story was just not a fun place to be as a reader. Last, the whole "Sophie kind of/sort of works at the magazine" just got old, as it had been doing for the last couple of books. And the idea of working two hours away from where you live? Huh? These were the reasons I felt the book was one I had to force myself to finish.I like the characters so much but this story fell far short for me.
I found the boss series about 8 months ago, I finish the first 5 book in about a week. I had to wait FOREVER for The Sister to be released. Worth the wait YES, wish that it came out sooner most definitely. I truly love Neil and Sophie, Ms. Barnett brings you in heart and soul. I've cried , laughed, worried about them. You get the full emotions reading this series. I mean going to hurry up and wait for the next book. ( Not that I won't be rereading all 6 of these book a few times before the next one comes out)
It's so nice to visit Sophie and Neil again. I don't need their third wheel lover, but I guess they do. The scenes with baby Olivia were precious. Barnette writes such truth that it often makes you feel voyeuristic, peeking into real, unfolding lives. Plus, her touches of humor are always on the mark.
I love this series, this world that "Abigail Barnette" created, never fails to suck me in and put my emotions through the wringer in the best possible way. This book didn't let me down. "The Sister" installment may have been the best yet. El-Mudad is an amazing character, and I'm so glad things are evolving with them. So many things went through my mind when I heard what the title was, but I learned my lesson with The Baby.... don't assume the obvious. Read it the minute it was released... just finished, and time to start again!
