Literary fiction at its best, a book that deserves its praise. Easy to read but full of thought-provoking second layers. For me, a book is great when as soon as you finish it you want to go back to the beginning and read it again more slowly because you know you will see more in every reading.
Excellent book where the story is told from both points of view. Ruby's story is of her past. Jack's is both present and past. Sometimes you get the story from both points. Other times, it is only one view. I got into the story and could not put it down. I felt the pain of both Ruby and Jack. I cried I was so into their lives. It was hard to let go. Well done! A keeper.
A VIRTUOUS WOMAN is about Ruby Pitt Woodrow, who was only 20 when she met and married Jack stokes. He was her second husband, after she had been married to an abusive drifter named John Woodrow, who she met on her father's farm.The story starts with Jack reminiscing about Ruby, and then goes into detail the life she lead and how she met Jack. Ruby's life as a child was one of ease, since her father owned a farm and they were comfortable. But she chose to marry one of the migrant workers on the farm and from there her life turned for the worse. Her first husband was abusive emotionally and physically and finally left her for a girl much younger than Ruby. She meets Jack shortly after her husband dies.The book starts with her death (from lung cancer) and back tracks to her childhood, her first marraige, and then to happier years with Jack. Each chapter has a different narrator, switching back and forth between Ruby and Jack. I liked this method of story telling, although at first I found it confusing.I recommend A VIRTUOUS WOMAN for the story content and the writing style.
I chose a 3 because the book was not very complex. I would recommend this reading for a older audience. I liked bits and pieces of the book but it wasn't a book that I wanted to just keep reading and reading. Didn't have much depth.
An Interesting love story between 20 year old Ruby Pitt Woodrow and 40 year old Blinking Jack Stokes. Ruby was the daughter of a prosperous family and Blinking Jack was a migrant farmer who did not have much to offer. Ruby, a beautiful young lady, and Jack, not a very attractive older man got together after the death of Ruby's abusive husband. Ruby had ran off with her first husband without the blessings of her family. The author had Ruby talking about her life in one chapter and Jack talking about his life in the next. There was not much said about Jack and Ruby's life together. I enjoyed the way the author had them switching back and forth in the different chapters.
Splendid. I've read it several times since it was first published. Enjoy it more each time. Few authors ever reach Kaye Gibbons' level of skill. She is incredible.
This heartbreakingly beautiful novella about love and loss is one of her best. This portrait of a marriage is like a song. No wonder Eudora Welty named Gibbons her literary heir.
On the surface this is a simple story about the lives of plain people but underneath it tells of the deep love between two people. What begins as a marriage based on mutual need becomes one of an abiding love for one another. The alternating voices of the husband and wife is a great device to tell this story. Very good!
