As I read the reviews, I don't understand how this book got a 4.5 star rating. I feel like I was generous with a 3 star. I think the storyline was a good idea, but the story seemed disjointed and at times disconnected. The writing style seemed more like a Young Adult style. Characters were thrown into the story and were never properly developed. There were some exciting moments, but then they were dropped before the reader was given time to connect the event to the storyline. Sasha spent the majority of the book being chased by zombies. She cleverly avoids being killed, but then is chased again. Characters are thrown into the story and then disappear with no explanation. Sasha is then taken into another world, but the reader is not sure how or why. At the last minute, the reader is given a minimal explanation. I love paranormal stories, but this one just didn't do it for me. I won't continue with this series . Very disappointed
It is always a risk to try a book by a new author, but I love the books of Dima Zales’ wife and I am really into UF, and boy am I glad that I took a chance on this one. There have been mumblings by industry insiders that Paranormal/UF are past their peak and are actually on the wane (I haven’t observed this myself), so I am doubly glad to discover a new and exciting UF series.I also had some reservations about a guy writing a female POV heroine, but Anna Zaires (his wife) mentioned in a newsletter that they had in fact co-authored the book, and I have to say, I really liked the narrative voice, it’s a perfect combination of snarky and sweet, quirky and down to earth.I found the premise different enough to spark my interest: it can best be described as a kind of Minority Report meets The Mentalist. The heroine, Sasha Urban (ok, her surname does appear a tad corny) believes herself to be a quite ordinary person living in a normal world. By day she works as an analyst for an investment firm and though she admits to some natural aptitude she thinks it’s mostly hard work that makes her so good at her job, even if she doesn’t particularly like it. At night she pursues her real passion and works as a magician/mentalist at a restaurant/club where she performs magic tricks that can all be explained rationally. One night she is approached by a TV show producer who offers her an appearance on a live show and she grabs it with both hands. While in the studio she has her first real vision and it is not a good one. And though her vision turns true, she refuses to believe that she has any supernatural ability and is looking for a rational explanation for the events. Unfortunately her TV appearance has also brought her to the attention of the supernatural community (the Cognizants) that has a strong mandate against exposing their world to normal humans. Soon different factions of Cognizants are after her while she is still looking for a rational explanation for everything that is happening and has difficulties coming to terms with her precognitive abilities, even though all her visions/dreams come true. But that only makes her question herself more as she is afraid that she is in fact enacting a self-fulfilling prophecy…This first book in the Sasha Urban series has all the right ingredients: a quirky, likable heroine, great supporting characters, a good narrative voice, great (but not overwhelming) world-building, an urban setting (New York) that is an important part of the story (the perfect backdrop for a scooter chase), good overall pacing, an interesting slew of supernatural creatures (vampires, necromancers, zombies, patterners, precogs, truth seekers and other less common mythical creatures, including a domovoi, a type of Russian house elf). There is also the mystery of the heroine’s origins that is alluded to, and two mysterious men that promise to become even more important in the future.I was wholly captivated by this first installment of the Sasha Urban series and would give it a solid 4 ½ stars. Can’t wait to get my hands on book 2, titled Misfortune Teller, set to be released on September 4, 2018.
I am a lover of paranormal books but this book is mostly about Sasha being chased by zombies. I am NOT a lover of zombies, one or two are fine but a whole book full was over the top for me. Be prepared for more of a horror story versus a good paranormal book.
Dima Zales knocks it out of the fantasy park with this one. I became hooked immediately which is key for me and Always a good sign of a promising read ahead.Love the plot twists of a normal mid twenties heroine attempting to make her way and a name for herself outside of the norm 9-5 job and dealing with real life struggles who then gets tricked (play in words here) into so much more than meets the eye. Lol. Without giving too much away, our heroine is Sasha, a mentalist, an illusionist, and she seems to have a good grasp on people's behavior and expected reactions but she just can't comprehend no to predict her own. Fighting an anxiety issue to fight for her dreams brings her closet to a DreamWorks than she could ever expect. Toss in an unknown and slightly rocky childhood and two supportive yet completely different roomies and you have plenty for great storylines.I really enjoyed the colorful scenarios and humanism mixed into the fantasy world..like an elderly neighbor with a sick cat, a selfish mom who she just can't deny, a more of transportation likely to one in a busy city and stretched thin income. But no fantasy rom-com would be complete without the gorgeous best friend and the side kick along with some mysterious other worldly characters and freaky scary but funny events. This book meets all the criteria and I am so excited to find book 2 as it opens the door for so much more!
Every time I put down this book to do things in the real world I kept getting pulled back. I just wanted to learn more with Sasha. There’s a lot of crazy stuff happening to her and she doesn’t know what’s going on, but then she gets these visions that drop just enough hints to make you guess what’s going on. The author did a wonderful job with this book. I can’t wait to find out who’s hiding what and what the bigger picture is. I'm pretty sure more surprises await us in book two.The Girl Who Sees is the first book in the Sasha Urban series.Final Rating: 5 Stars
