Review
"This book is a gem — witty and full of insight. It should be compulsory reading for every aspiring director." —Dame Judi Dench"This book is so sensible, so straightforward, so complete, and so 'right' that somebody might think it was not serious. They would be wrong." —Playwright Edward Albee, 3X Pulitzer Prize Winner "The next best thing to working with Frank Hauser is to read his book. His wise and pithy observations on acting and rehearsing don't age, reminding me how much I have learned from him." —Sir Ian McKellen"Excellent book—I've dipped everywhere, always with profit and pleasure. Very attractive book, too." —Sir Tom Stoppard"This book is filled with smart, useful, thoughtful advice, born of years of service to an elusive craft. How rare it is for two of our own to talk so shrewdly, candidly and succinctly about the process of making a production. I learned a lot from this remarkably straightforward book, and I debated with it. It is invaluable." —Director Mark Lamos "It's a testament to the value of these modestly titled Notes that they go far beyond their wonderful applicability to the staging of a play or the creation of a film. This book will be a delightful read for nearly anybody, filled as it is with humor and life lessons, and the priceless insight of two keen observers of human behavior." — Scenic Designer Robin Wagner, Multiple Tony Award Winner "Blunt, funny, utterly relevant, amazingly illuminating. I've never read anything that taught me more about the theater in so short a space . . . deserves to earn at least a million dollars, if not a Nobel Peace Prize." —Terry Teachout, Drama Critic, The Wall Street Journal

Is it possible to reduce the essence of directing down to a series of concise, to-the-point "notes" which are presented in a coherent, linear fashion and which strip away all of the fluff normally found in books like this? Well, yes! Reich and Hauser have done just that in this book. What a refreshing experience it is to read seemingly simple, but often profound instructions on how directors can help their actors bring their story to life. I enjoy the "Do this, don't do that" basic instruction of these notes. As I have re-read the book for maybe the 4th or 5th time, I am reminded of the insight into the minds of both director and actor that this book repeatedly reveals. At the end of the day, successful directors must understand not only themselves and their actors, but humans in general. So many of the nuggets of truth found in this book apply not just to the director-actor interaction, but to all human interaction. Brilliant. This was an unexpected, and wonderful byproduct of this work, and I am a better person for having read it as many times as I have. Finally, having been personally directed as a young actor by Reich himself, I can attest to the fact that he lives by these notes, and they really do work.
Anyone who has savored the concise, witty, and invaluable advice in the classic -- Acting: The First Six Lessons by Richard Boleslavski -- will love this clever, useful book on directing. Frank Hauser was one of the great unsung directors of the international stage, and his observations here are wise, memorable, and eminently practical (In speaking about Peter O'Toole, Frank once said to me "Never work with a lunatic. They always have more energy than you do." Hauser's advice in this book is distilled and organized to maximum effect by Russell Reich. Not involved in the theatre? Never mind. This is a highly entertaining and eye-opening guide to the art of managing and leading people in any field. Try it, you'll like it.
The book is very catchy and appealing on the surface, but when you actually dig in to it you realize how much more it is than a primer on directing. In many ways it is a primer on how to organize and solve a complex problem. It is a guide to how to think about directing that can be applied to many similar processes. Well worth the time. A book that you will want to keep in your pocket.
So glad this has been re-released. I found this book as a young drama student in London 15 years ago, and it has affected everything I've done since. I'm not even in the theatre anymore and I still draw wisdom from it. Anyone who wants to really refine their craft in the arts could benefit from having this book at hand.
